What is Achalasia

Achalasia is a condition that affects the muscles of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), causing them to not relax properly. This can result in difficulties with swallowing, regurgitation of food, and occasional chest pain. As time goes on, the esophagus may become dilated, leading to more severe problems with swallowing.

Symptoms of Achalasia

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) for both solids and liquids

Affected individuals often report that both solids and liquids have difficulty passing from the esophagus into the stomach.

  • Regurgitation of Undigested Food

Food that remains in the esophagus may come back up into the mouth, especially when lying down.

  • Chest Pain or Discomfort

Often experienced as a pressure or burning sensation. Pain may increase after eating.

  • Heartburn

A burning sensation in the chest, sometimes confused with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

  • Coughing or Aspiration

Nighttime coughing or choking, which may result in aspiration (breathing in food or liquid into the lungs).

  • Lump in the Throat

Feeling like there's something stuck in your throat or chest can be quite uncomfortable.

  • Difficulty Belching

It can be challenging for certain individuals to release gas through belching or burping.

  • Increased Salivation

When the esophagus starts to have trouble moving food efficiently, it can lead to a buildup of saliva and more drooling.

Causes of Achalasia

Autoimmune reactions

The body's immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves in the esophagus.

Genetic factors

Some cases of achalasia may have a genetic component

Infections

Certain infections, such as those caused by viruses, might trigger the condition

FAQ’S

What is the main cause of achalasia?
1. Achalasia is usually caused by the loss of nerve cells that regulate the muscles used for swallowing in the esophagus. The reason for the loss of these nerve cells is still unknown to healthcare providers. However, in rare instances, achalasia can be caused by a tumor.
Is it GERD or achalasia?
Typically, achalasia and GERD are considered to be on different sides of the spectrum when it comes to LES dysfunction. In achalasia, the LES might be hypertensive and have trouble relaxing when swallowing. On the other hand, in GERD, the LES could be hypotensive or have frequent relaxations.
Is achalasia serious?
It’s rare for people to pass away due to achalasia. While it’s a chronic condition, proper symptom management can help prevent serious complications like aspiration, choking, and malnutrition. Those with achalasia do have a higher chance of developing esophageal cancer.
