Cholecystitis - Symptoms, Cause, Diagnosis, Treatment, Risk Factor

What is Cholecystitis

Cholecystitis is an inflammatory condition of the gallbladder, which is a small organ located beneath the liver. The inflammation is typically caused by gallstones obstructing the cystic duct, which connects the gallbladder to the common bile duct. When the flow of bile (a digestive fluid produced by the liver) becomes blocked, it leads to irritation, swelling, and infection of the gallbladder wall.

Symptoms of Cholecystitis

  • Pain

Severe pain in the upper right abdomen that may radiate to the right shoulder or back.

  • Nausea and vomiting

    Often accompanied by these symptoms.

  • Fever

Low-grade fever may be present, indicating inflammation or infection.

Causes of Cholecystitis

Gallstones

The most common cause, blocking the cystic duct and causing bile buildup and inflammation.

Other causes

In rare cases, cholecystitis can be caused by tumors, infections, or anatomical abnormalities affecting bile flow.
